Sexually Transmitted Infection
The cold season is here with us, “winter” is upon us. And with the cold, the only natural thing to do is to keep our bodies warm. Warmth is sort by layering ourselves up and a hot beverage at hand. But some of us take it a notch higher by hitting up our partners, both ex and current to come over and help us chase the cold. What better way to chase the cold than with awesome company eh? Some Netflix and chilling never hurt nobody, right?
However, we know it is never only Netflix and chilling. One thing always leads to the other. And when one thing leads to the other, common-sense flies off the window. Only to return after the deed has been done. Then regrets and fear sets in.
It is very necessary to know the status of your partner to avoid future regrets. Having unprotected sex comes with it’s fair share of consequences. And one of the consequences is contracting or spreading STIs. But what are STIs?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections or diseases that are passed on during unprotected sex with an infected partner. This includes vaginal, anal or oral sex. Some STIs can be passed on by just skin-to-skin contact.
Types of STIs
- Gonorrhoea
- Chlamydia
- Genital herpes
- Genital warts
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which can lead to acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS)
- Bacterial Vaginosis
And others
These are some symptoms to look out for;
- Unusual discharge from your vagina or penis
- Difficulty or pain when you urinate and have sex
- Blisters, warts, lumps, bumps or sores on your genitals
- Rash, cracked skin, itchy or irritated skin on or around your genital region.
- Abnormal vaginal odor
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
However, there are those individuals who do not experience any of these symptoms, and might feel that they are perfectly fine. It is for this reason that regular checkups are necessary. Some symptoms might come and then go away after some time. In case one notices anything out of the ordinary, please come and see a health professional.
Can STI be treated?
Yes!
Bacterial infections can be treated using antibiotic medications. Unfortunately, STIs caused by viruses cannot be treated, however they can be managed through medications which help lower the risk of spreading the infection.
Vaccinations are used to prevent HPV and Hepatitis B.
Condoms when used correctly help reduce the spread and risk of STIs.
